![]() Something that goes back a quarter of a century Have you time? And it wouldn’t bore you, would it?” “Incidentally,” a character in his novel Beware of Pity (1939) says to Stefan Zweig at a party, “I wouldn’t mind telling you the whole story straight out here and now. Zweig’s writings often feature him as a sort of literary detective: the famous, wealthy, cosmopolitan author Stefan Zweig, who pops into his own text and is approached by an irresistible narrative. He was a novella expert who called the form “my beloved but unfortunate format, too long for a newspaper or magazine, too short for a book.” Zweig also made fantastic use of narrative metalepsis - in other words, the intrusion of the narrator into the world of the story. Zweig faded from the American eye over the years until a sequence of reissues by multiple presses sparked new critical interest in his work. The manner of Stefan Zweig’s death and his position as an idealistic prelapsarian thinker perhaps muted the reception that the novella deserved Zweig, who was Jewish, never wrote about Hitler, and his suicide was related to despair over the loss of his homeland. Also in 1942, that same writer and his wife committed suicide in Brazil. ![]() ![]() IN 1942, A WORLD-RENOWNED Austrian writer in exile wrote a strange novella. ![]()

In an engaging atmosphere, its simultaneously down to earth and dreamy characters find moonstruck moments of transcendent truth in the midst of chaos and uncertainty. Its short chapters, digressions into authorial opinion, eccentric imagery and near-delirious use of language, all grounded in a thematic exploration of the nature and manifestations of idealism, create a powerful sense of pointed playfulness. It tells the sometimes violent, often outrageous and occasionally sentimental story of the sexual and emotional coming of age of its heroine, the idealistic Leigh-Cheri, a princess of the kingdom of the heart. This novel is a complex, sardonic interweaving of fairy tale and philosophy. ![]() ![]() While recreational readers will appreciate the drama and poignancy of Eichar's solid depiction of this truly eerie and enduring mystery, pickier researchers may question the lack of bibliography or notes to indicate exact sources, which makes the accuracy of his re-creation of certain events difficult to judge. ![]() Through his research into the many bizarre and seemingly unexplainable aspects of the tragedy, he attempts to rule out previously suggested causes such as an avalanche, an attack by a native tribe, Soviet weapons testing, and even aliens. While it is about some of the villains of Dr Who, sometimes Rudden humanizes them and if you’re like me, I like sometimes when villains are shown in a different light and discover why they act or may be perceived as villainous. Author and DCU Writer in Residence, Dave Rudden joined Tom on the show today. I loved the voice of the narrators! It was cool to hear the writer himself-Dave Rudden-narrate some of the chapters (I love when writers narrate their books) as well the renown Nicholas Briggs (who I thought captured one of the Doctors voices very well as well as his persona). Yes I added in both, because the story does cover various incarnations in its chapters.
